TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

With an Alzheimer's diagnosis, I had no idea how much quality time we had left together. I felt a panick to take care of business, and get our life simplified.

We needed to downsize...........Our home was too large, and it had too many steps inside and out, and it wasn't safe for David.
I threw myself into high gear and started organizing all of our possessions. I ask our children if they wanted any of the items, and what they didn't want, I started making piles of throw aways, keepers, and items to donate.
Honestly, it was a very good feeling to purge our home of items we really didn't need.

We were so lucky that our house sold right away, and especially before the housing market took a dip.......
Where would we live? God answered our prayers, a rent house became available several blocks from where we were presently living.
Best of all, the rent house was across the street from a new garden home subdivision. We bought a lot, and had a home built to our specifications.

From the time David was diagnosed until we moved into our new home, there was a time period of 22 months. I was doing my best to take care of business as fast as possible; all the time thinking David would start declining. This didn't happen at all, instead he almost appeared better. I think the medications really helped to stabilize him, and it helped that he no longer had to cover up his actions, he was more relaxed.
David would walk across the street several times each day to watch the progression of the house being built. Each evening he would take the broom across the street, and sweep up after the contractors. This gave him something he could do, and made him feel useful.

Our home was blessed ....... our best friends wrote blessings all over the studs of our new home. The next morning our contractor was upset because he thought someone had written graffiti in the house...... that is..... until he read the wonderful scriptures written all over the boards. God is good!

Selling our home, moving, building a new home.....during all of this, David was such a trooper and did so well! We're truly enjoying one day at a time.

I remember what a "take charge" attitude you had when you first found out. I was filled with admiration that you took the bull by the horns and sought out to making the best life for both of you. Talk about a "winning attitude"! What a good role model you have and have always been to me! L~
