A DIFFERENT TYPE OF COCKTAIL

HAWAII 1982 Here are some excerpts from an article I read yesterday.........

A Cocktail May Slow Alzheimer's

Memantine (Namenda) is marketed for moderate-to-severe Alzheimer's, but two recent studies suggest it is effective for all stages of the disease when used in combination with any one of the older Alzheimer's drugs, like Aricept. While there's no cure, some doctors say a two-drug cocktail including memantine (Namenda) is the best way to slow deterioration in quality of life.

A 943-patient study published Feb. 9 in the online edition of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, found that patients getting combination therapy were a third less likely than those taking cholinesterase inhibitors(Aricept) alone to be admitted to a nursing home during the average follow-up time of five years.
A 382-patient Harvard study, published late last year, found combination therapy slowed decline in daily-life activities and cognitive function. For example, patients who took combination therapy for two years correctly answered an average of two more questions in a battery of 37 simple questions than patients who got a cholinesterase inhibitor alone (Aricept), says Harvard instructor Alireza Atri, director of the Special Dementia Unit at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Mass. After four years, the combination-therapy patients got nearly five more questions right, adds Dr. Atri.

David's cocktail each morning and evening for over three years has been two Aricept and two Namenda. I'm so thankful that his doctor started him on these medications right away; I really feel they've slowed the progression and given us a longer quality of life.
After the initial diagnosis, the Aricept was started, and a short time later the Namenda was added. I remember clutching the prescription in my hand, and being so thankful to have a medication that might possibly slow the progression of this disease. Not too many years ago, people were given a diagnosis of Alzheimer's, and then walked out of the office empty handed, with little or no hope.

Unfortunately, for now, there's no cure, but slowing the onslaught of Alzheimer's is a big deal! The longer we can hold Alzheimer's at bay, the more hope there is for a cure.
I say, "thank you God for medicinal cocktail's, good days, and wonderful memories past and present."

First I must say that you and your precious David have been so lucky to have had all of the amazing travel experiences. In each photo I can see the happiness and contentment you feel.
Second, thank God for the new research and the ability to combine medications. When my mother was diagnosed, she was put on Aricept and by the time Namenda was a possibility, she was just too far into the disease. AND, after learning she also had Lewy body disease, I wonder if even the Aricept helped her. Please, share more of these wonderful photos with all of us....
