ALZHEIMER'S - EXERCISE - EATING the RIGHT FOODS

I've read and  heard some people say how eating healthy foods and exercising can ward off Alzheimer's.      I sure wish that were true!!!    If it were, David would not have Alzheimer's.  His body is very healthy, and for that  I'm thankful.   Oh sure, exercise and eating right is good for us......but I don't think it has anything to do with Alzheimer's.

David started actively jogging in 1963.   Four years later in 1967 he read a book by Dr. Kenneth Cooper, and he stepped up his pace.   David jogged 2 or 3 miles for 5 days every week for 30 years..... then he started walking, and walked a couple of miles for 10 years.

He was always conscious of eating healthy foods that were good for him.    I broiled or baked our meats, and we very seldom ate anything fried, unless we went out to eat.
We ate a lot of vegetables and fruits.

David smoked for a couple of years when he started his first job.... he stopped when we started dating.

I pray for a cure for Alzheimer's each and every day, but I don't feel the answer is exercise and eating a proper diet.   Just my thoughts.............

Thought for the Day
"There are times that we find ourselves paralyzed with fear - unable to decide or unable to move. Stop worrying and start doing. If you really trust God and believe His word, draw on His strength, put aside the worry and start moving forward again - once you do you will find there are wonderful days in store for you."
Have an awesome day today!
Elmer Laydon
The water has warmed up enough for us to get in the pool each afternoon.    Casey loves drinking the salt water from our pool, and David loves cupping his hands and giving her water.

We've had a wonderful week.
GOD IS GOOD!

Thanks for the lovely inspirational words!

I don't think that diet and exercise cause Alz either...I think it's a weird brain chemistry handed down in families...I hope it skips me!

How do you get a salt water pool?

POOL PARTY!!!! I'm so jealous!

That looks like a wonderful pastime for you and David - you can't help but have fun and laugh at both your antics in the water - and the pooch drinking salt water!

I'm with you on the exercise thing. MIL gardened and walked ever since I knew her. She was walking for exercise up until 2 years ago when she went to the assisted living place. Walked in the hallways there. Then she broke her hip, and the walking stopped. But the Alz. was coming on years before she stopped her walking. The scientists can come up with theories, but the families of those who have Alz. know.

Bless you two - have fun swimming!

I'm with you on the bit about exercise, crosswords, etc. I have to admit though, seeing David in the pool on a cold night over here, makes me feel our cold weather even more...lol... Best wishes, Jenny :)

You are right , eating 'right foods' has no direct connection with curing Alzheimer as far as I know. But one thing can surely help him -- YOga . Yes,yoga is ideal exercise to get rid of almost any kind of diseases.

Dolores, I agree, it has nothing to do with dementia! My husband's physical health is excellent. I do believe keeping one's mind active is very important but I don't believe that has anything to do with dementia...if it did, then why to CPA's, engineers, etc have dementia? I am so happy to know you have had a good week. David looks very happy in the picture. God bless!

I agree with You! I think they tell you what's "good" for you just to boost the market in those areas...

When my mother was first diagnosed, my sister and I went to hear a doctor speak on Alzheimer's and that's exactly what he said.
I agree with you. There's just nothing we can do...but hope.
I love your thought for the day. Hope you have a good one!

Oh how wonderful to get back into the pool! I'm so glad that you've had a wonderful week. (I agree with you...exercise and good food are wonderful, but the cure is not in that.)

More and more I'm convinced ALZ is brought on by something environmental. Plastics, Hormones in food, etc. WHO KNOWS!

It is all scary. :( My guy's dad is healthy, too. Only his mind has left him. My dad is physically as well as having the monster in his brain.

Today I PRAY this slow growing affliction passes my hubby and I by. I worry for my children and all they may one day face. So...I'm trying my best to TRUST GOD with everything...even that unknown bundle.

I think you are right . Eating healthy and exercise will not stop Alz's. I have heard if you keep your mind busy that will keep Alz's away. I don't believe that either. Look at David and Pres, Ronald Reagan . They both were busy, high functioning man . My mom never ate healthy and we could never get her to exercise. Most all day was watched soaps. She did read . She read lots of love stories and novels and she quilted all the time. I think reading gets you mind working. Not sure about watching the soaps.

I agree with you on this subject, altho they do recommend a lot of curcumin its suppose to be the ((thing )) to take, its found in curry apparently people from Indian rarely get alzheimers and they think this is the reason why.
My little mother in law no longer recognizes us,sometimes she remembers a face but not the name or relationship ,my son dadn't seen her in a while he was in tears after our vsit.Such a sad disease.
One day at a time Delores... Take care

Wonderful quote, Dolores. Good post!

I keep reading that research on diet and exercise. I do think that diet and exercise improve the quality of life for our loved ones, but am not sure it slows the disease down.

Hugs,
Carol

I agree. I also don't think you can ward if off with crossword puzzles, reading, etc., like I've heard people say. If it's going to happen...it's going to happen. My Dad exercised too.

Oh, Dolores.......David DOES look very happy!!! I agree with you about food and exercise: my mother walked miles and miles every day....and never ever ate junk food or anything fried. She was a perfect example of good health!! We finally got her a treadmill because we didn't want her walking those miles outside at nite!! She read a book-a-week for as long as should could....and ran the Geology Dept. at Case-Western Reserve U. for years!!!

I pray daily for a cure, too. It's a horrific disease. You continue to be my mentor: an earthly angel~xoxoxoxox

I am with you 100% on that idea, Dolores. Elbert was healthy, too. He only weighted about 20 lbs more (maybe less) than he did when he joined the Navy back in 1950. He was always working hard and playing hard. I don't know what causes Alzheimers but I don't think being unhealthy has a think to do with it.

Love the picture of David in the pool with the dog. Blessing, my friend.

It is always good to try to eat healthy and get exercise, but I think too many people are quick to promote these as the way to eternal health and well-being. I know way too many people who are like your beloved David, not overweight, eat healthy, get exercise, who have serious health problems, and a lot of people who are overweight, make poor diet choices, smoke, abuse their bodies, who live a long time with memories intact. Sometimes this culture seems determined to blame us individually for our bad health, making us even more distressed about our selves.Truth is, we live in a fallen world and we are all going to suffer health problems, or die sooner that we'd like to because of this. God provides eternal life through His Son but does not promise we will live forever healthy and problem free in this life.

I hope you are not too stressed this coming week and especially that you are not feeling any false guilt over any of your circumstances.Praise God He is faithful to us when we are weak and feeling vulnerable. He is good.

Hi! I agree with you 1 million percent. My mother was the poster woman for good, clean living. We are either going to get this horrible disease, or we aren't.

Here's to staying healthy, positive and managing the best we can.

Over the years, we have all heard so many theories as to what causes Alzheimers... taking care of our health and trying to avoid exposure to toxins in the air and our food is the best we can do. Thanks for the quote--I've been there myself--just paralyzed with fear... yes, take a step... do what you can and trust God. Like my friend told me one time when I was in the midst of a crisis: "Just do the 'next thing'." If the dishes need to be done, do them. If you need to grab some groceries, do it. If you need to make a meal, just make a meal. Just do the 'next thing' and moment by moment, you will get through the day, the week, the month. One thing is constant in life: change. Things change. Whatever horrible thing is happening now, it will change at some point. Just do the next thing. Have a good weekend, Delores & David!

Hi Aunt D! Well, I can attest to the fact that Uncle David....and you, always ate very healthy! I always love coming to your house because I feel like it's good for my health! Lol. I remember how much he ran too. He has about the most UNaddictive personality I know. So I completely agree with you.....based on knowing what a healthy lifestyle he has lived!
SOOO glad he can get into the pool know!!!
Love you! L~

Dolores,

I so agree with you, eating right certainly doesn't make a difference in preventing all kinds of Alzheimer's Disease.

Being paralyzed with fear...I have been there, and you are so right about just taking a step and God does the rest.

Thank you so, so much for writing this blog. My Dad is having problems with memory and day to day stuff. We don't have an Alzheimer's diagnosis yet but his doctor put him on Aricept. Reading this blog has helped me so much in dealing with my Dad. Thank you.
