CURRY ANYONE?

I try to stay aware of the right foods to prepare for David. Foods that might possibly help to stave off Alzheimer's a little bit longer (every little bit counts). So far he's drinking grape juice, apple juice and orange juice. I try to prepare a lot of fresh vegetables and buy fresh fruit for us to eat. Our meat of choice is baked or broiled salmon or tuna. I try anything I read that might possibly help.

I read in our newspaper that curry might keep dementia at bay. The article from London said that a new study suggests eating curry once or twice a week could prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. The key ingredient in curry is curcumin, a component of the spice turmeric. The ingredient appears to prevent the spread of amyloid protein plaques in the brain which are believed to cause dementia.

The article said, "Researchers from Duke University in North Carolina are testing the impact of higher doses --the equivalent of going on a curry binge for a week -- to see if they can maximize the effect. Professor Murali Doraiswamy says there is evidence from animal test that a curcumin-rich diet can dissolve the plaques in the brain in older mice and prevent them from occurring in younger mice. Doraiswamy says the next step is to test curcumin on human amyloid plaque formation using new brain scans. Those plans are already in the works.
Right now the only time I use curry, is when I make chicken salad. I plan on buying a fresh supply and sprinkling it on more than chicken salad.....what can it hurt?

And I say, "thank you God for fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, for people doing research on Alzheimer's, and for summer (I love spring and summer)."

P.S.
..... David had vegetable soup tonight with curry powder..... he loved it! Yea!

That's good to know... there are quite a few Thai and Indian food/recipes out there that have curry in them.

Just the other day we had an Asian chicken with curry and coconut..it was very spicy, very curry..it tasted pretty good. Cameron didn't care for it though.

I think I recall having several yummy sounding recipes with curry in them. I'll go through my recipe clippings and see what I can find. If I find any, I'll make a copy for you :-)

Oh .... the mysteries of the diet! I have wondered so many times if something Mother ate or drank during childhood somehow played a role in having not only Alzheimer's but Lewy body dementia as well!!!!

On a positive note .. I could eat curry every day and never tire of it! Happy Sunday to you and David!

I got some great photos of balloons from my deck early this morning. What fun!

That is REALLY interesting about curry. It is wonderful that you and David have always eaten such healthy foods. Whenever I've come to visit...I've always loved eating healthy foods that also taste GREAT!! So good they are doing studies on foods that can help.
Great idea about stringing beads too! I think he'll like that!
Love you! L~

Delores,

Thanks for your comments! :) The waterfront area in Camden is Amazing!!!! There are so many more pics that I plan to share. :)

Curry huh? My Mom was such a picky eater... I wonder if she would have liked curry? I love curry! I just may have a sprinkle or two myself considering Alzheimer's is hereditary.

Thanks for the info! :)

I just found your blog through the Alzheimer's Team blog. My mom is in the later stages of Alzheimer's. I am the only one of her children that lives nearby. I find that the people who are on this journey are the one's who can really relate to what a difficult disease it is. I am sorry that you are facing it. I think that you are doing an important service to other's going through it to share your information and experiences. I am going to read through your archives with interest.
