The following article was on the Real Age site, and I thought of David. He chews gum every afternoon....all afternoon, and he's a very calm....most of the time.
Relax with a Stick of This
This Week's Tips
Next time you are stressed and don't have cash for yoga or a massage, grab a stick of gum.
A little chewing just might be an inexpensive ticket to calm, a new study suggests. The folks in the study who chewed gum were far less likely to report feeling stressed than their gum-free peers.
In fact, the research on over 2,000 full-time workers had gum chewers reporting less stress and less depression. It's not clear if the gum chewers were simply happier people by nature or if the chewing somehow helped those feelings -- perhaps by stimulating the vagus nerve, a key player in inducing relaxation. And, no surprise, the study did receive funding from a gum manufacturer, so more research is needed to confirm the link. Still, a stick of gum is certainly cheap and worth a try.
Don't Mess with Stress
Chronic stress can dampen your quality of life and put your good health at risk long term. And while it might not hurt to try a little chew therapy (hey, it works for dogs!)

After David was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, 4 1/2 years ago, one of my big concerns: 'what if I get sick'..... who will take care of David? I'm doing my best to take care of myself, so I can take care of David.
I had blood work taken last week, and this week was my routine/yearly appointment with my doctor. I feel great, but there's always that underlying worry. Thanks be to God.....blood pressure good, cholesterol good, the doctor said my blood work was perfect. I feel so relieved and happy. Now if I could lose 15 or 20#'s........
David is still doing good, and I say, "thank you God for many blessings!"

Oh yes, thanks be to God for all the blessings, large and small. It's been a good week in Cooleyville. Well, Tattler had some issues she blogged about. I always feel so much better after I write my woes out of my system.
hugs and love, judi
That's a great picture of dad! His beard is filling in so nicely.
And yes, I am so glad that you make your health a priority and you take care of yourself. I am thrilled for you and dad that he continues to do well!
As for the gum chewing, I definitely agree and believe it relieves stress. Do you remember how I chewed gum all the time when I was in junior high and high school? It did help with all the stressful garbage going during that time. It also helped me get through the pain when I got my braces adjusted. It also helped me not snack as much. I did read somewhere though that for some people chewing gum can cause them to swallow air and have more gas :-0....
Love you a bunch!
Karen
The beard looks good!
I am glad all your test were good. Don't worry so much that will get you down. Keep a smile on your face. I know easier said than done.
Mom used to chew gum all day and all night if I did not get it out of her mouth but I started findingit in places it should not of been . I am trying suckers on her now. She sucks on her oral swabs like candy so I got her some suckers. If that does not work I am going for the big candy pacifers that the bigger kids suck on. What ever works. Good luck and best wishes.
Praise the Lord for good health! You keep up the good work so you can keep taking care of David. His beard does look good! I always liked a man with facial hair. My hubby has always had a moustache. I don't think my youngest two kids have ever seen him without one.
I'm a big gum chewer - don't know if it helps on stress or not, I just like to chew gum...
I know chewing gum keeps me from chewing the inside of my cheeks and also helps me expend excess energy, and as you say, it helps dogs! ( not that I am implying I or your husband are dogs)
His beard makes him look scholarly, my husband has had a beard most of his life, so I am partial to beards on kind men....look at Santa!
I'm so glad to hear that about gum. I am a dedicated 'chewer'. I can understand why David enjoys it. You're wise to take care of yourself Dolores and you both look great!
Deb
David looks great ~~ and you sound great! Good that your blood work is right where it should be - - mine isn't!
Happy Weekend and Valentine's Day!
I so agree.. we have to stay healthy. I worry constantly about my health and if something would happen who would take care of Mr. P... I hope you're having a super Valentine's Day!

Okay...who would have ever thought that about gum! I am now going to pick up that habit!!
I looooooove that picture of Uncle David! He's such a SWEET man!!
So glad you got a good report! Don't know what we'd all do without YOU!!
I love you!! L~
So glad for your good reports - that was always my worry also.

I'm so happy to hear that David is still doing well and that you had a good check-up too. It sounds like you are not only taking good care of David, but also of yourself. Keep up the good work.
If you figure out how to lose those pounds let me know. I am so out of control.
David looks happy and content !
My MIL chews gum like crasy ...about pack a day and for the most part she is calm,I like it that way !Apparently sugar free gum is great for your teeth too.

Have a great weekend

Just checking in, Delores. It's been a week since your last post and I just want to say I'm thinking of you.
So proud of you that you see the wisdom and have the necessary follow through of "putting on your own oxygen mask, before taking care of those around you".
