David could write and express his feelings better on paper than in spoken words. On birthdays and special occasions I would give him a card and ask him to write something.
He wrote letters to both our children on their birthdays . It's like a beautiful surprise package each time our daughter calls me to read a letter she's found that her dad wrote. What a beautiful blessing for us to read his words in the midst of this sadness.
Our daughter called today to read me a letter that David had written when their first child was born 23 years ago tomorrow.
We cried and cried as she read his words...... it was a long letter, and in the letter he apologized for it being too long and being a sermon. (We wanted it to be longer and to read more!!!)
My advice to everyone: write words of love and wisdom to your loved ones. Save the letters you receive...... they're such a blessing to read later on.
This was David's last dance with our granddaughter at her wedding in March of last year.
She'll be 23 years old tomorrow.
Happy Birthday Francie!!
A friend sent me these lyrics a few days ago, and they speak volumes to me!!!
Thank you Amber!
"Let It Be a Dance" by Ric Masten
Let it be a dance we do.
May I have this dance with you?
Through the good times
And the bad times, too,
Let it be a dance.
Let a dancing song be heard.
Play the music say the words,
Fill the sky with sailing birds.
Let it be a dance.
Learn to follow, learn to lead,
Feel the rhythm, fill the need.
To reap the harvest, plant the seed.
And let it be a dance.
Everybody turn and spin,
Let your body learn to bend,
and, like a willow with the wind,
Let it be a dance.
A child is born, the old must die,
A time for joy, a time to cry.
Take it as it passes by.
And let it be a dance.
Morning star comes out at night,
Without the dark there is no light.
If nothing's wrong, then nothing's right.
Let it be a dance.
Let the sun shine, let it rain,
Share the laughter, bare the pain,
And round and round we go again.
Let it be a dance.
God is good!!!

Aunt D,
One of the things I treasure the most, are the letters my dad wrote to me in college. I've read them countless times. I never knew at the time how much I would value them later on. I just went and looked at a book Uncle David gave me years ago....and he wrote such valuable advice to me. I'm so glad your post made me remember that I have this. And so thankful Karen and Jeff have his beautiful words forever! Love you! L~
I am sitting here crying. Such a wonderful gift that you have the letters to read. I have no letters from my parents but have recipes in my mom's writing and every time I take them out I realize what a treasure I have. I love those lyrics..thanks for sharing.
Happy Birthday to your beautiful granddaughter Francie!!
Thanks for this great advice. I save cards and notes from my husband and kids and special ones from friends. I will WRITE more now. Sending love to you. XO, Pinky
The written word has so much power. Power to enlighten, uplift, encourage, share feelings that matter, record the important things in our lives, and writers that care do all in one letter. Sounds like David, and also you in this blog.
Letters certainly are the next best thing to a visit and you can save them. Wonderful reminder to do this in our frantic world of Facebook, Twitter, Flicker, Pinterest, Linkin, Google Plus where we are not really connecting one on one with the people we love.
The post also has dancing and appreciating dancing in the rain more than weathering the storms.
Hugs and prayers,
Carol
Hi darling, I wish Mr. P would have written more over the 34 years of marriage. I have all the cards he's given me, I cherish those. I'm glad you have hand written words David wrote... hugs ~lynne~
My dear Dolores,
I am so grateful for this post. I have always kept the cards and letters with handwritten messages and have drawn strength from them again and again. Thank you for reminding me of the comfort of the written word.
I love the poem as well. It has spoken to my heart this morning and I am blessed.
Love and prayers to you and David.
In Grace,
Marie
I have tried to save many written cards and letters over the years. My keepsake box is getting full. One day my granddaughter and I decided to go through it. She loved it! I love this post, Dolores. You always give us so much to think about. And wasn't that thoughtful of your friend to send you those lyrics?...so thought provoking. They really hit home. I have you in my prayers every night. God bless you, Dear.
Awwww! Happy Birthday to Francie! Love the photos Delores!!
I started my blog for the same reason...hopefully my words will be out in the grid for centuries to come...
(((HUG)))
What a treasure David's letters are and will continue to be. You are offering a wonderful piece of advice here today.
I am so glad I saved many letters from my parents. I keep them in a pretty box on my dresser and from time to time will take one out and read it. Their is something so personal about one's handwriting.
Your photos today are just wonderful. I looked at the first one and could see the love and joy. A good father is a blessing and it is evident that David is just such a father.
Through the pictures and blog post, we all can see why you fell in love with him. He is quite a remarkable man.
spoken words are great...but words on paper can be treasured for ever...nice reminder...
Letters can be a gift that keeps on giving. As you say, one must save them. Your daughter has saved hers, which is wonderful.
A very special post with a special admonition.
Blessings and love to you and your family...
I could not read all the song. I started crying at the first few sentences.I will read more later. It seemed like a Monday all day and it is Thurs. LOL!
My dad used to write notes for everything. We still find notes in stuff and he has been gone for over 22 yrs. I love finding them. We found one he wrote to me and mom That said forgive me for being a mean old man but you girls know you love me. LOL! I guess us girls and him at a differance of opionion.
Dear Dolores, what a treasure to have David's letters. They have to be a true comfort in these times of trial.
Elbert was a prolific letter writer. Even in the midst of war he managed to get letters off to me. Unfortunately I did not save them all. I would have had a room full. ha But, the best ones I take out and read now and it is the best feeling.
I think of you so often and know the steps you are walking. I pray that God blesses you every day.
Hi Dolores,
I've been thinking about you and hope you are doing as well as you can be. What a wonderful blessing to have these beautiful letters! I've been keeping a handwritten journal for Chelsea and have slacked a bit with writing in it - I'm not inspired to do so right away.
Hugs,
Karla
Dear Dolores,
Every time I look at the boxes containing old letters, cards, etc. I'm thankful I saved them. I am also thankful I kept a journal during the years I cared for Mother.
Hope your weekend is a good one,
Helen
It is wonderful that you will always have these letters to go back to and reread as much as you want....Christine
Oh I treasure letters so much. I keep my mom's and dad's letters I used to receive in the 70's and good part of the 80's as they lived in NY and me here, in Ecuador since 1975. I also have a beautiful poem daddy wrote just for me when I became sweet 16. Alejandro's love letter, that were so special and so thoughtful. Yes, letters were the best, people hardly write them now as we just use the internet...sad in a way. I can imagine the beautiful letters your brilliant David must've wrote to his lovely daughter..a real treasure to keep now that his mind is no lnger with his family, BUT his mind now it's in his own written words for you all to keep! Have a happy and blessed weekend darling Dolores and happy birthday to that pretty grand. What a treasure of a photo, David looks so handsome.. I do remember you posted her wedding last year! Love,
FABBY
Oh, and I'm copying the beautiful lirics you shared with us! Thank you sweet friend.
FABBY
Dolores,
This certainly is a beautiful post. How wonderful to be able to read his words as if he were there talking to all of you. I always save my cards from my kids and grand kids cause they always say such nice things. Yes, we should all write more, thank you David for teaching us all to write to our loved ones. Hugs...Lu
I have every card and letter my mother sent me, and every card and note my husband has given me. Those don't get thrown away! Especially in these days of e-mail... writing is so important. What special lyrics to that song. Great advice.
I'm afraid letters and notes are becoming a thing of the past with so much online now. You just reminded me of something...I have all the letters my husband wrote to me before we were married hidden away. I must get them out. Thank you for the reminder.
I always was a wrter of expression myself to my family, friends as well of shutins the sick, lonely. So now as a Grandmother of six children. I decided many years ago to make each Grandchild to journal inside scrapbooks what I made each one . As memories of them and also for them pictures of my hubby and I inside. Five have them already. One more I am making . They could not belive me as a Grandmother did that. They loved them. So with your husband writing letters that is real Special. Not many dads I know have the gift from the heart to write the children. It is a sure gift for your family. What a treasure. Everyone has different gifts in life. So your family are very blessed. I enjoyed your blog and pictures. Hubby a very handsome man.
Hugs my dear new friend
Carol from Canada
That was very nice song what Amber sent you. It was a perfect blessing for you. God knows his time and reasons.I love the picture the last dance with your daughter.
Dear D...
As I read your post God began to speak to my heart. I've been so overwhelmed with my hubby in school and even a bit angry (no...not true...A LOT ANGRY) because his studies and class work have taken so much of our time together. I've been in a foul mood at times and spent many a moon complaining instead of praising.
Reading this post has softened my spirit...that is always a good thing for me because I'm a perfectionist by nature and can be hard on others as WELL as myself. I'm stepping back once again and asking God to lead me and to show me in the realist of way all I have to be thankful for.
Blessings to you as this journey continues. May you continue to be lifted up by those loving letters written by your beloved so long ago.
Love you~thanks for stopping by and for the congrats. They mean so much.
Love, Rebecca
I'm so sorry - I'm so behind on my blogs.
I'd give anything to have a letter from my father.
I hope you're okay; I haven't checked on you in a while. The dogs have had fleas, Jeep had the poop emergency - it's just been hectic as heck around here. But I think about you all the time!
love,
barbara
your sister/daughter, etc...
